According to surgeons across the country who have been interviewed, many of them have stated that the bulk of their patients are younger and more open-minded than ever before. Among the most popular options for surgery among this age group include filler treatments and Botox injections. Once candidates have had procedures like these, they feel confident enough to go on and have more extensive procedures carried out.

Social Media Plays a Huge Role

Experts have suggested that social media has played a tremendous role when it comes to the amount of millennials who are choosing to have plastic surgery performed. 24-year old Brooke Stevenson recently underwent surgery and had liposuction performed on her arms and a round of breast augmentation. She stated that she had been feeling self-conscious about some aspects of her body, which prompted her to go under the knife. She stated, “Even though I am only 24, every decision I’ve made in terms of surgery has been for myself.”

Stevenson noted that seeing herself in a photo is the main factor which motivated her to start having Botox injections administered a few years ago. “People will say, ‘Oh, my goodness, I cannot believe you’ve had Botox,’ and the reason I get the Botox is because down the road I don’t want to be like, ‘Oh, my goodness, I have so much I need to do,” she said.

February is Breast Season

Dr. Nan Mizuguchi, who is a plastic surgeon at Calobrace and Mizuguchi Plastic Surgery Center, stated that the month of February is traditionally known as breast season because of the fact that the most popular plastic surgery procedure that is carried out during this time at his practice is breast augmentation. He reiterated that the growth and overall popularity of social media has resulted in his patients – especially younger ones – knowing exactly what they want to have done. He stated, “Everybody knows how to take pictures, and they certainly know how to take good pictures of themselves.”

More Surgeries than ever for Patients under 30

Information gathered in a survey that was conducted by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery revealed that 64% of surgeons have reported seeing a sharp increase in injectable treatments and other forms of cosmetic surgery in patients who are under the age of 30. The survey authors suggested that this could be because in general, millennials tend to be highly impressionable and they are also becoming more comfortable and unashamed of having cosmetic surgery performed. Mizuguchi stated in this regard, “And they will come and tell me, ‘You know, I look good from this side, but I don’t look good on this side.”

Stevenson also mentioned that because she is still young, it would be easier for her to recover from surgery than it would be if she had been older. When questioned, she said that she had plans of returning to work within a few days after having her surgery performed.
