During their first appointment patients always comment to us, “I can’t believe I’m here…that I’m doing this.” And I always ask, “why???” People consider it “vain” to pursue plastic surgery. As if wanting to look your best was a sinful desire.

Well, raise your hand if you have done any of the following:

  • Worn Spanx for a special occasion
  • Purchased expensive makeup
  • Had a body part waxed
  • Gone on a diet
  • Colored or highlighted your hair
  • Plucked a grey hair
  • Worn braces
  • Had a mani or pedi
  • Checked yourself in the mirror before an important meeting
  • Whitened your teeth
  • Purchased something that make you look skinny
  • Sucked it in for a photo
  • Purchased a miracle skin cream

Guess what, we all do vain things. You may not want to admit it but you’ve likely done a few of those things on the list. Me, I’ve done them all! Why? Because I like to look good and when I look my best I feel better about myself. Does that make me vain? I don’t really think so. In fact, when I feel my best I don’t really worry about my appearance because, well, I’m too busy enjoying life to think about it.

That is exactly why what we do is so extraordinary. As plastic surgery providers we are able to give people the ability to feel confident in their own skin and stop worrying about their flaws. Some people will argue, but plastic surgery alters who you are and that’s not natural. Ok. Well, good plastic surgery makes subtle changes to the face (or body) so that others only notice you – not the changes. Good plastic surgery highlights the person – not the change – so that person can be the best version of themselves. Generally others rarely identify the results of good plastic surgery. They notice the new confidence the patient exudes. Confidence and happiness. Is it vain to want that or just good health?

My theory on the real reason the subject is so taboo for some? It’s expensive. Yep, good plastic surgery isn’t cheap. That’s true. In fact, it’s an investment. But it’s an investment you take with you every minute of the day and is there anything better to invest in than yourself? In my book, it’s one of the best investments you can make.

So, my fellow vain friends, cheers to good investments and happiness!
