Long Pulsed Yag Laser Boston

Do your legs give away your age? Have you developed varicose veins that give you purple lines alone your thighs and calves? Are red spider veins showing on your legs? Do your varicose veins and spider veins make you self-conscious about wearing clothes that reveal your legs – bathing suits, shorts and dresses. Blue veins or tiny red “spider” vessels can appear on otherwise smooth skin, making you look older. There are a variety of relatively simple, minimally invasive treatments that can reduce or remove visible varicose and spider veins.

What is a Long Pulsed Yag Laser Treatment?

A Long Pulsed Yag Laser is a solid-state laser capable of producing a near-infrared wavelength that penetrates deep into the skin and is readily absorbed by hemoglobin and melanin chromophores. The lasing medium of Nd:YAG is a man-made crystal (solid state) that is pumped by a high intensity lamp and placed into a resonator (a cavity capable of amplifying the power of the laser). By creating a variable long pulse duration and an appropriate spot size, it is possible to significantly heat deep skin tissues, such as large blood vessels and vascular lesions.

The Long Pulsed Yag Laser is used in vein reduction surgery to reduce bright red blood vessels, dark veins, and capillaries that look like a spider web on your legs. The first stage is to identify the veins that you are interested in treating and mark them. The Long Pulsed Yag laser is used to slowly make the veins fade and disappear.

How is It Performed?

You will first meet with your medical provider to agree on the veins to be treated and the expected results, at which time the veins may be marked for treatment. No anesthesia is required for these laser treatments. The procedure takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. The laser is then used to send strong bursts of light into the vein. The laser follows the line of vein. These bursts may produce a clicking sound and a sensation like an elastic being snapped against the skin, but pain is relatively low. The energy is absorbed and the vein walls collapse and seal shut.

What can I Expect?

There is no downtime from laser vein reduction. Treatments with the Long Pulsed Yag laser are effective on small and larger varicose veins. The patient can reduce the probability of continued development of varicose veins through a regular exercise regimen, the use of compression stockings, long periods of sitting or standing, crossing legs for a long period of time and wearing high heels or very tight clothes.
