Have you noticed that the veins in your legs are starting to become more pronounced – blue varicose veins or small webs of red veins called spider veins? Does this make you self-conscious about wearing clothes that reveal your legs – bathing suits, shorts and dresses. Veins can appear on otherwise smooth skin, making you look older. There are a variety of relatively simple, minimally invasive treatments that can reduce or remove visible varicose and spider veins.

What is Vein Reduction Surgery?

Vein reduction surgery is designed to reduce bright red blood vessels, dark veins, and capillaries that look like a spider web on your legs. The first stage is to identify all of the veins that you are interested in treating and mark them. A laser is used to slowly make the veins fade and disappear.

How is it Performed?

After meeting with the medical provider to agree on the veins to be treated and the expected results, the veins may be marked for treatment. No anesthesia is required for these laser treatments. The procedure takes between 30 and 90 minutes, depending on the number of veins being treated. A laser then is used to send strong bursts of light into the vein. The laser follows the line of vein. These bursts may produce a clicking sound and a sensation like an elastic being snapped against the skin but pain is relatively low. The energy is absorbed and the vein walls collapse and seal shut.

What Can I Expect?

There is no downtime from laser vein reduction. Treatments with the Rohrer laser are most effective on smaller veins (3mm or less). Larger varicose veins may require more than one treatment or alternative treatment modalities. The patient can reduce the probability of continued development of varicose veins through a regular exercise regimen, the use of compression stockings, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing, crossing your legs for a long period of time and wearing high heels or very tight clothes around your waist and legs.
