Lack of a defined upper eyelid crease is a common reason patients of Asian descent pursue facial plastic surgery. The procedure that is used to correct this cosmetic complaint is called a blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery. During a blepharoplasty, the eyes can be made to look larger by reducing the fat and enhancing or creating an eyelid crease that looks completely natural.
For some patients, an epicanthoplasty, or inner eye lengthening, may be suggested. This removes the small section of skin from the inner corners of the eye to make the eye appear larger and longer. An epicanthoplasty can occur with eyelid fold creation, in some cases optimizing the overall look. The goal of the epicanthoplasty is to achieve a brighter, younger look and reduce the appearance of tired-looking, small eyes.
