Kids Cosmetic SurgeryThere is an ongoing debate when it comes to what age should it be OK to acquire plastic surgery and many parents have mixed feelings. In some cases a simple in-office procedure can be the difference between a child being bullied in school. Sure it is easy to say to your child they should be happy with how they look but bullying is a very hot issues in the U.S and many young kids are opting for the procedure.

  1. Dear Dr. Spiegal, As a consultant in cosmetic Medicine in the UK and a former family Doctor for 22 years, I am alarmed that you could even think it might be right to perform aesthetic procedures in a child/young person. The problem is the bully not the child. Schools need to tackle the bullies and the child/youth needs counselling to cope with the problem. We should not accept bullying as normal. Even if you “fix” the cosmetic problem the bullying may continue. The solution is clearly NOT within the remit of the aesthetic/plastic doctors. Start procedures at this age and you have an emotional cripple and aesthetic dependent for life. Dr. Geraldine McKeever MBBS, MRCGP, Memeber of the British Association of Cosmetic Doctors.
