Women who reach the golden age of 50 often notice that their overall appearance begins to deteriorate a little from around this time. Although it is often thought that people in this age category simply have to learn to live with the changes, this is by no means the case. In fact, the following forms of plastic or cosmetic surgery have become rather popular in the over 50’s age group, with instances of procedures being performed increasing by as much as 70%.
Laser Skin Resurfacing
Also known as lasabrasion, laser vaporization or laser peel treatment, this laser treatment involves directing short, concentrated and pulsing light beams at skin that is blemished or irregular in any other way. It works by removing the top layer of skin to reveal the new and unblemished skin underneath. This process also helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and a cosmetic surgeon will normally numb the areas that are being treated beforehand. This treatment may not be suitable for people with darker skin or skin that is overly sensitive.
Dermal or Wrinkle Fillers
Many women opt for this treatment in place of traditional facelifts because it is not only more cost-effective; it is also a far less invasive treatment option. Most filler treatments only take around 30 minutes to perform and their effects can last for over a year in some cases. They help to ‘fill in’ problem areas around the eyes, on the forehead and around the mouth and numerous different types are available. However, your cosmetic surgeon will inform you which one will work best for you. Once you have had wrinkle fillers injected into your skin, it is essential to wear broad spectrum sunscreen in order to have the effects of the filler last as long as possible.
Breast Uplift Surgery
Most women don’t realize that regular breast implants only last between 10 and 15 years – or even less if hardening of the implants occurs prematurely. Known as mastopexy, this procedure is common for women over 50 because of the fact that the breasts tend to sag lower and lower with age. The procedure involves repositioning the nipples higher on the chest wall and the breast tissue itself will also be repositioned appropriately. This is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.
Points to Remember
Before having any form of cosmetic or plastic surgery performed, it is imperative that you use the services of a reputable surgeon. This will ensure that you are completely satisfied with the end results and that the risk of side effects occurring will be minimal. If you suffer from any pre-existing health conditions, you will also need to inform your cosmetic surgeon beforehand. This will help ensure that the procedure goes smoothly and that no risk will be posed to your health in the process.
Just because you may have reached the age of 50, it does not mean to say that you will need to be content with looking old. In fact, many women over 50 who have had cosmetic surgery performed end up looking younger than ever before.
