When questioned about which aspects of their appearance bother them the most, numerous people will state that it is the fact that they have a double chin. In some cases, this trait can even affect people who are not overweight. Over the past few years though, various forms of plastic and cosmetic surgery options have been developed, which can help reduce or even eliminate the appearance of this often embarrassing characteristic completely.

Neck Lift and Defatting Procedure

Patients who are older and who have had a double chin along with a lot of loose skin around the neck for many years will benefit more by having a neck lift procedure performed in conjunction with defatting the surrounding neck area as well. During this procedure, the excess fat that results in the appearance of the double chin will be removed, while any muscles in the neck area that are sagging will also be tightened. At this time, the plastic surgeon will also remove any loose or excess skin that may be present behind the ears.

Laser Liposuction

Although regular liposuction was used regularly to help reduce the appearance of a double chin, laser liposuction has become the preferred choice. This procedure works by helping to liquefy the fat in the neck area, and tiny tubes are then used to remove it completely. The heat from the laser device itself then helps to tighten and firm the skin around the neck and chin areas as well. This then successfully helps to eliminate the double chin entirely without having to have the neck defatting procedure performed as well.

Facelift Procedures

In cases where the appearance of the double chin is not overly severe, having a face lift procedure performed can help reduce the appearance of it to an extent. However, the results of this may not be as long-lasting or as effective as the two procedures mentioned above. As a result, this option will only be recommended by plastic surgeons in instances where the appearance of the double chin is not overly noticeable. However, the plastic surgeon will make recommendations regarding which procedure will be the most suitable.

Important Points to Remember

Before having any plastic surgery performed, it is important to choose a surgeon who is not only well-known, but who is also highly experienced at performing the procedure that is going to be performed. This will not only ensure a satisfactory end result; it will also enable the procedure to be performed with minimal side effects or risks being posed to a patient’s health. Patients who suffer from any form of bleeding disorders or other medical conditions should inform their plastic surgeons before having any procedures performed.

Once patients have had any of the above mentioned procedures performed, they should abide by their surgeon’s post-operative instructions with regards to rest, recovery and any other forms of treatment that may need to be followed. This will enable healing and recovery to take place as quickly as possible.
