Laser hair removal is the perfect alternative to shaving, bleaching, and waxing. This procedure uses a very fine but intense beam of light to remove unwanted hair from different parts of the body, including the face, arms, legs, underarms, and bikini area.
The color of your hair and your skin type will have an effect on the overall success of laser hair removal and the number of treatments you will need. The laser itself targets pigment in your hair called melanin, so if you have light skin and dark hair, the treatment is more effective. Laser hair removal isn’t as effective for people who have white, gray, light red, or blond hair because there is less melanin, which means the laser can’t “see” the hair as well.
Keep in mind that there is no guarantee of permanent removal, even for those who have dark hair. Hair may grow back in treated areas, but if it does, it is usually finer and light in color. What’s more, some people may experience skin irritation after the treatment, but this goes away during the several hours following the procedure. It may also lighten or darken affected skin areas, and this is temporary. This is more prevalent in people who have darker skin. Finally, laser hair removal is not recommended for eyelids and nearby areas due to the potential for eye injury.
Before your laser hair removal treatment, don’t tan or go out into the sun. Wait until any tan you already have disappears completely. Don’t pluck, wax, or undergo electrolysis since they can interfere with hair follicles and the laser’s ability to remove hair. Following your treatment, feel free to apply ice to any treated areas to reduce irritation and swelling. You should also avoid exposure to the sun and UV lights.
