Academic Awards & Happenings

In addition to seeing patients in his clinical practice, Dr. Spiegel is a very active academic surgeon. He is an associate professor at Boston University School of Medicine and is frequently called upon to speak and lecture to other physicians.

Here are some recent Academic happenings:

Dr. Spiegel lectures nationally on facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. For example, he recently led a seminar in New York City on Contemporary Minimally Invasive Treatment Techniques for Facial Rhytids at the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery. The latest and best techniques to treat facial wrinkles were presented. Dr. Spiegel’s hand-picked panel of experts include Dr. Stephen Perkins, a Facial Plastic Surgeon from Indiana and former president of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. Tina Alster, a Dermatologist in Washington, D.C. and a leader in skin care and the cosmetic use of Lasers, and Dr. Sydney Coleman, a plastic surgeon in New York City who is an expert in fat grafting and the inventor of Lipostructure.

Dr. Spiegel has written many book chapters for important head and neck surgery texts. These chapters include nose surgery and broken noses (nasal fractures), reconstruction of the mandible (jaw), voice surgery to change the shape of the voicebox and the tone of the voice, and on the management of snoring and sleep apnea.

Dr. Spiegel has also just completed writing a chapter summarizing the fundamental concepts of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This chapter, targeting medical students and surgeons in training, appears in a comprehensive textbook Essentials of Surgery edited by James Becker, MD – Chief of the Division of Surgery at Boston University Medical Center.

Dr. Spiegel has edited two books on his own. He was the editor of Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America for February 2005 and April 2004.

Other notable publications include guidelines in an American Medical Association journal on how to safely use Botox for treatment of wrinkles around the eye and an anatomy study of facial muscles important in facial plastic procedures.

Dr. Spiegel’s research has also been widely presented and publicized recently. A project evaluating the safety of certain surgical procedures for snoring and sleep apnea was recently presented at a national meeting in Phoenix, AZ. The results of Dr. Spiegel’s study were thought important enough for Reuters to have a reporter interview Dr. Spiegel and write a summary of his work for publication in newspapers nationwide. The report was published by Reuters.

Previous studies by Dr. Spiegel on the effectiveness and safety of different types of soft tissue augmentation materials (useful for reconstruction or to fight wrinkles or make lips larger) have been selected for publication in a number of prestigious medical journals.

Dr. Spiegel recently spoke on reconstruction of facial injuries and defects after cancer surgery at a large regional cancer meeting hosted by Dr. Spiegel in Boston at Boston University. The meeting featured prominent physicians from around the country and was well attended by surgeons from throughout New England and New York.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery is one of the most rapidly advancing and dynamic of all areas of medicine. As an academic physician, Dr. Spiegel is always discovering newer, safer, and more effective ways to achieve the best aesthetic results.

Here are some of the newest services available by Dr. Spiegel:

Bone Reconstruction -A recent study published in December 2005 Cosmetic Surgery Times discusses the need for both soft tissue and bone correction for a full cosmetic anti-aging treatment The article is based on findings from an age-related study following changes in the skull for each gender presented at the annual meeting of American Society of Plastic Surgeons in Chicago. As people age their bone volume retracts and not only accentuates the soft tissue sagging and wrinkles caused by sun damage, smoking and age but changes the shape of the face. Dr. Spiegel has extensive experience in bone reconstruction and has seen firsthand the impressive results attainable with these surgeries.

The Pillar™ Palatal Implant System -Restore’s “Pillar Procedure” is an exciting and innovative solution to snoring. Three small implants are placed in the soft palate tissue causing the area to stiffen over time and allow air to move properly during sleep and reduce the vibrating sounds associated with snoring. The procedure only requires an office visit, as Dr. Spiegel is able to place the implants into the soft palate in just a few minutes. Patients typically see an improvement in their snoring after two to four weeks and often see long lasting results allowing for better sleep for themselves and loved ones.www.pillarprocedure.com

ThreadLift™-The ThreadLift™ is an exciting and innovative procedure that offers results similar to a surgical facelift without the downtime, discomfort or scars of actual surgery. This non-invasive procedure takes only about 30 minutes and can be applied to the neck, brow, and cheek and jowl areas. Dr. Spiegel carefully inserts fine threads (some smooth and others that are barbed) underneath the skin using a thin, hollow needle. Once inserted, the barbed threads grasp on to deep tissue fat pads located in the droopy soft-tissue problem areas. When the threads are lifted, the tissue is pulled up and shaped to give the face a rejuvenated appearance. For more information visit their website atwww.contourthreads.com.

New Wrinkle Fighting Fillers

You’ve heard a lot about Botox, and may have heard that all sorts of new injectable materials are now available to help fight wrinkles. The truth is that these filler materials have a completely different mode of activity from Botox, and are actually best used in areas where Botox is less desirable – such as around the lips and mouth.

In addition to the common filler materials, such as Zyderm® and Cymetra® (types of collagen), Dr. Spiegel offers the new filler materials including:

Restylane® – this new injectable filler has just recently been approved by the FDA for facial wrinkles. Restylane is a form of hyaluronic acid and can last up to six months.

Radiance® – Dr. Spiegel was one of the first physicians in Massachusetts to offer this material for the treatment of facial folds and wrinkles. Radiance is a form of calcium hydroxylapatite – a natural mineral in an aqueous gel. This material can be injected through a fine needle and provides a soft, natural improvement that can last 2-5 years, or longer!

To find out if one of these New Wrinkle Fighting Fillers is right for you, be sure to contact Dr. Spiegel.
