5 Emotional Benefits from a Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty Benefits

Rhinoplasty is the medical term given to the more commonly-known “nose job”, and it’s one of the most common and popular plastic surgeries around the world. Rhinoplasty may be reconstructive in nature, or it may simply correct a perceived imperfection. Rhinoplasty can be emotionally beneficial for the recipient, as well. Here are some reasons why.

#1 – A Self-Esteem Boost

The number one reason why people seek rhinoplasty has to do with their very own self-esteem. When these people look in the mirror, they are bothered by a perceived imperfection looking back at them. Perhaps their noses are too large, too crooked, or perhaps there’s a bump they wish wasn’t there. These slight perceived imperfections can take a tremendous toll on the individuals who must look in the mirror and see them every day, and rhinoplasty can correct that.

#2 – An Aid in Recovery from a Tumultuous Past

Bullying isn’t uncommon, and it doesn’t just happen to children, either. Adults and children alike are repeatedly bullied for their appearances, and this can create psychological conditions up to and including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. While plastic surgery should never be used to treat a psychological condition, and while people should always seek therapy for psychological conditions like PTSD, many adults in therapy have found that surgically repairing the physical issue that led to the bullying makes them feel better about themselves.

#3 – A Better Outlook on Life in General

The clear majority of those who undergo rhinoplasty develop a better overall outlook on life in general. They are happier, they are more successful, and they tend to push themselves further in their work and in their play. Because these individuals no longer spend time fretting over imperfections in their physical appearances, they feel more confident in their relationships, work and hobbies, and they have more quality time to devote to being successful in each aspect of their lives.

#4 – More, Better Quality Sleep

Another emotional benefit that stems from rhinoplasty is more high-quality sleep. Imperfections in physical appearance can sometimes wreak havoc on someone’s subconscious state of mind, and this can lead to a lack of quality sleep – or even a lack of sleep in general. Those who undergo rhinoplasty find that they spend less time fretting over their appearance at night and more time drifting off into a peaceful sleep. The end result is a more restful, rejuvenating night and a brighter, more outgoing personality as a result.

#5 – Fewer Feelings of Depression and Anxiety

Finally, there is evidence to show that physical imperfections are a major cause of depression and anxiety in people of all ages. Whether it’s a crooked nose, some extra weight, or even gray hair, imperfections in one’s appearance as they perceive it can trigger feelings of sadness, and for some, anxiety as well. People who undergo rhinoplasty to improve their appearances can often recover from depression and anxiety much more quickly with the help of therapy than those who do not resolve what they consider to be the underlying issue.

Rhinoplasty isn’t just about improving the physical self. It’s also about the mental self and the subconscious toll these imperfections can take. When a physical imperfection causes an emotional response, therapy is always a great starting place. For some, however, repairing the source of the perceived imperfection can be a stepping stone in resolving emotional turmoil.
