Sick of Hair? Why Laser Removal Might Be Your Answer

laser hair removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most common cosmetic procedures across the US, and it can benefit both men and women equally. It’s perfect for those who are no longer satisfied with shaving, plucking, and waxing unwanted hair in a variety of locations all over the body.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Most laser hair removal procedures work by aiming a highly-concentrated source of light – typically a laser – directly at the hair follicle itself. The pigment in the hair follicles absorbs the light in the laser, which effectively kills the hair and prevents a new hair from growing in its place. Although most patients require three to seven sessions to enjoy permanent hair loss, they claim that never having to shave, wax, or pluck again is incredibly freeing.

Who’s a Good Candidate?

Because the laser light targets the pigment in the hair, it is an especially good option for anyone who has dark hair they no longer way to shave, wax, or pluck. If you have fine or light-colored hair, laser hair removal may not work as well for you because the pigment in that hair absorbs less of the light. Whether you have only a few strays or an entire body area that you wish to treat, laser hair removal can be beneficial, practical, affordable, and convenient.

How to Prepare

Although there are products you can order that promise to permanently destroy unwanted hair, these rarely work as promised. In fact, accurate laser hair removal should only be performed by a trained professional, such as a doctor or technician. If you’ve made an appointment, limit the amount of plucking, waxing, or electrolysis you undergo for at least six weeks prior to the procedure. Remember that the laser will target the hair at the root, and things like waxing and plucking will remove the root, potentially increasing the number of sessions you’ll need to permanently remove the hair. What’s more, you should avoid exposure to the sun or tanning booths for the same period as these can make the procedure less effective or even increase your risk of unwanted side effects.

What Are the Side Effects?

Just about any procedure available to you for hair removal comes with side effects, and laser hair removal is certainly no different. For a day or two once the treatment is over, you may look and feel like you’re suffering with a mild sunburn. This is perfectly normal, and you can use a cold towel or cooling moisturizer to help with your comfort. If you got the hair removal procedure on your face, avoid makeup for the first day, but feel free to wear it again the next. If you experience any kind of blistering, please notify your doctor. Make sure you wear sunscreen for the next month to prevent any temporary pigment changes in your skin.

Laser hair removal is a great option for people who have grown tired of repeated waxing, plucking, or even shaving areas of their body. While it often requires repeat treatments in order to permanently remove the hair, patients agree that it’s a very freeing experience and one they wish they had sooner.
