How to Not Let the Cold Weather Ruin the Skin on Your Face

Cold Weather Skin

As winter fast approaches, many people will end up dealing with the issue of dry, itchy, inflamed and cracked facial skin. If you are one of the unfortunate people who suffer from various skin conditions during the cold winter months, read on to find out how you can make this a thing of the past.

Moisturize Daily

One of the best ways to protect your skin against the harsh cold is to invest in a good quality moisturizing product. While cream-based products are recommended for use on regular or semi-dry skin, you should consider using something oil-based if you suffer from extreme dryness, as this will help hold your skin’s natural moisture for far longer. If you suffer from skin that is excessively dry or sensitive, products containing perfume-based ingredients and lanolin should be avoided, as these could further irritate your skin.

Limit your Use of Soap and Hot Water

This may sound counterintuitive to good hygiene practices, but excessive use of hot water and soap-based products will strip your skin of its natural oils – and first line of defense against the cold weather. When taking a bath or shower, use lukewarm water and soap-free cleansers, and pat your facial skin gently to dry it. Rubbing it will only cause further irritation, which will be further exacerbated by the chilly weather. Always apply moisturizer right after bathing or showering as well.

Cover your Face Outdoors

When going outdoors, it’s recommended that you cover as much of your face as possible, as this will help prevent the skin from being over-exposed to the cold. This can be done by using a scarf and/or a hooded jacket. It is also a good idea to coat your lips with a good quality lip balm before setting foot outdoors.

Wear Sunscreen

This is one skin care tip that many people tend to forget in winter, thinking that the sun won’t have an effect at this time of year. However, research has proven that the sun’s UV rays can sometimes be harsher and more harmful during winter than summer. As a result, you should invest in a sunscreen product with a rating of at least 30, as this will go a long way in helping to prevent the formation of new wrinkles and fine lines during winter.

Get Some Exercise

Last, but not least, it’s recommended that you engage in between 20 and 30 minutes of aerobic-based exercise a few times a week. This is not only good for the body overall; it will help give your skin a natural glow during the winter months as well.

Taking the best possible care of your facial skin during the cold winter months will help ensure that it is glowing and ready to show the world when summer finally arrives.
