How Wrinkles Might Have Been Passed Down From Your Mom
One of a woman’s worst beauty nightmares is the fact that she may develop facial wrinkles at some stage of her life. Initially, it has been thought that wrinkles develop as a result of not taking proper care of facial and neck skin from a young age. However, a recent study has shown that some women may have the potential to inherit genes from their mothers which would make them more susceptible to developing wrinkles than other women.
Mitochondria can Affect the Aging Process
Mitochondria are one of the main components of the cells that make up the body as a whole. Should these become damaged through aging or other risk factors, they will mutate and break down. This causes them to lose their ability to produce energy which in turn increases the possibility of wrinkles forming. The latest study has in fact also shown that the mitochondrial DNA that has been passed down from mother to daughter will affect the rate at which the daughter shows her first signs of aging. For example, if the mother showed her first signs of aging in her 40’s, it is highly likely that the daughter will only show her first signs of aging at around the same time.
Treating the Signs of Aging
Although developing wrinkles may be inevitable for some women, this does not mean that they have to live with them forever. Today, there are numerous treatments available that will help reduce the appearance of wrinkle within a matter of weeks. While some women still opt for traditional forms of plastic surgery, others may prefer to take the Botox route. A course of Botox injections can usually be administered in a plastic surgeon’s office and their anti-wrinkle effects can last anywhere up to six months.
Preventing the Formation of Wrinkles
Although it may not always be possible to prevent DNA-related wrinkle formation, it is possible for a woman to take additional precautions that will help slow the aging process. Using a good quality sunscreen can help protect the skin from developing UV-related wrinkles. Exposure to cigarette smoke and excessive alcohol consumption has also been shown to accelerate the development of aging lines and wrinkles, which is why these substances should be avoided as much as possible.
How Dietary Changes can Help
It is also highly recommended that women consume a diet that is rich in antioxidants, as this can also help prevent the onset of wrinkles. This would include consuming as many natural foods as possible, such as a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and oily fish. Avoiding processed foods and those containing an unnatural amount of chemical-based ingredients will also ensure that the skin remains looking youthful for as long as possible.
While the study initially focused on cell aging and the effects of genetic disposition, researchers are hopeful that the findings may be helpful to potential future development of therapeutic interventions which in turn could play a part in slowing down the aging process.
