What are Alpha Hydroxy Acids?

Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alternatively known as AHA, alpha hydroxy acids are commonly used in cosmetic products to assist with the rejuvenation of damaged skin cells. The reason for using them is because of the fact that they are able to assist with the shedding of the outermost layers of skin which in turn allows new skin to grow a lot quicker. One of the most common places that these acids are found is in chemical peel products that are usually used on the facial area.

Different Types of Alpha Hydroxy Acids

While many people think that all of these acids are the same, this is actually not true. Although many of them can be found in sources such as milk, sugar cane and various types of fruit, there are also synthetic varieties that are used. The most common forms of this acid that are used in beauty products include glycolic acid and lactic acid. Although there are a few different types of this acid, they are all generally used to perform the same functions, and that is to clear up a dull skin tone, help control oily skin and give a person a more radiant facial appearance in the process. Alpha hydroxy acids are also used in exfoliating skin products to help give the skin that refreshed feeling after being cleansed.

Products That Contain Alpha Hydroxy Acids

There are quite a few skin care products on the market today which contain this rejuvenating substance. Among them are usually astringents, toners, certain types of moisturizing creams and lotions, facial serums and some day and night creams. Before deciding which products to purchase, it is important to check the list of ingredients to see whether it contains alpha hydroxy acids or not. If it not present in the listing, or there is no list of ingredients on the product, it may be best to choose other products which offer more information about their ingredients so that you can be sure that you have chosen facial care products that contain this essential ingredient.

Potential Risks Associated with AHA’s

Although products containing AHA’s have been designed with skin rejuvenation in mind, there may be a few risks or side effects that could be associated with using them. People who have sensitive skin should exercise extreme caution when using them, as they may lead to skin irritation, itching, burning or even peeling in some cases. The good news is that there are different strengths of alpha hydroxy acid products available, so if you do experience any discomfort after using a product, it is usually possible to switch to one that has a lower concentration of AHA in it. If any of the symptoms persist, even after discontinuing use of the product, it may be wise to consult with a dermatologist immediately.

Because skin peel products can make a person extremely sensitive to sunlight and susceptible to sunburn, it is important to use a good quality sunscreen product if you are going to spend time outdoors.
