Wal-Mart Targeting 8 Year Olds With Make Up And Anti Aging Products?

I think sometimes large corporations use incorrect judgment that really lands them in the hot seat with the entire community. A recent decision to offer make up and anti-aging products to tweens (8-12 year olds) is just strange.

According to a recent news site:

The new ‘Geo-Girl’ beauty line is said to be aimed at the ‘tween’ market of 8-12 year olds, and will include blusher, mascara, face shimmer and lipstick that is ‘mother approved’, as well as anti aging products.

According to the marketing team behind the line the formulas are designed for ‘young skin’ and contain natural ingredients like white willow bark, chamomile, lavender and calendula, as well as anti-oxidants which are said to prevent aging.

The manufacturer has come and said it is aimed at youngsters who would like to wear makeup but more so for parents who don’t want them wearing chemicals on their face. Do you think it is appropriate to be marketing anti-aging products to children this young? These products have stirred quite a debate when it comes to physical appearances and how far things will go in the business world.

    Dr Spiegel,

I agree with you. Industries are sometimes going too far. My question is: does somebody need makeup at age of 8-12 ??? The other day I was in great surprise when one of my coworkers admitted that her 7 yrs. old daughter is using mascara, lipstick…full makeup ( I am not sure what brand). Isn’t that too early?? I think there is time for everything. Let girls be girls, with a beautiful skin as it is.

I understand the general feeling about the anti-aging aspect of this, however, as an estheticienne, I think that a basic regime to enhance and protect the skin is important. My mother, also an estheticienne, protected our young and fragile skin from the elements. In cold weather a protective barrier is important to guard against chafing and wind burn, additionally so for the sun….as it is the most dangerous due to the possibility of skin cancer. It worked for us as the gals in my family are always ranked at least 10 years younger. We love to see their jaws drop when they ask.

If it is done intelligently and with only the basic needs I don’t see the dilemma.
Makeup for this age group should be executed appropriately. Mascara, lipstick, gloss, a little blush and some eyeshadow is perfect for special occasions. It’s when the little girls try to emualate rock stars and look trashy is when I draw the line.
